Dr. Lane B. Mills
Dr. Lane Mills began his tenure as Superintendent of Wilson County Schools (WCS) on July 1, 2016. Dr. Mills is no stranger to WCS having served as Assistant Superintendent for Accountability and Technology from 1997-2007. Prior to coming back to WCS, Dr. Mills was the Superintendent for Craven County Schools for 4.5 years.
“I am committed to engaging students, staff and community members to create a relentless focus on success,” Dr. Mills said. “I will remain approachable and available to the community and schools in every possible way. This is not a job for me, but a calling.”
Under Dr. Mills' leadership, WCS has gone from being identified as a Low Performing School District and being ranked 90th in performance out of 115 North Carolina school districts to now ranking 59th. In the past two years, WCS has the highest increase in proficiency of any school district in the state!
After graduating from Union County Public Schools, Dr. Mills attended East Carolina University and earned a bachelor’s in psychology. He earned his master’s and doctorate degrees in school psychology from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Mills began his career in education as a school psychologist for Edgecombe County Schools.

Dr. Cheryl F. Wilson
Dr. Cheryl F. Wilson is native of Eastern North Carolina, an area where her educational connections strongly remain, and her leadership extends from the school system to touch local community organizations. Dr. Wilson received graduate and post-graduate degrees from East Carolina University. She began her professional educational career as a classroom teacher and earned her National Boards for Professional Teaching, Middle Childhood Generalist prior to serving as a curriculum specialist. Dr. Wilson's administrative experiences include assistant principal and principal. During her tenure as an administrator, Dr. Wilson was recognized as Principal of the Year in 2012. She is an alumni of the 2015 NC Education Policy Fellowship Program.
Dr. Wilson extended her leadership district-wide as Leadership Coach prior to her promotion to Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. In 2017, Dr. Wilson joined Wilson County Schools as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. In 2018, she was named Associate Superintendent. Dr. Wilson believes that positive, trusting relationships with staff, students, families, and community members are essential building blocks in a student's school experience. Shortly after joining Wilson County Schools, Dr. Wilson enrolled as a member of Dynamic Leadership in Wilson. She serves as president of Alpha Psi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and a member of Beta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa. Dr. Wilson is committed to serving the students and families of Wilson County while supporting students to reach their potential and graduate with more than a high school diploma.
An important aspect of her life is family. Dr. Wilson celebrates forty years with her husband, Raymond with their two sons, Lee and wife, Samantha and Phillip and wife, Laura. They have seven amazing grandchildren, Michaela, Brighton, Zachary, Walker, Savannah, Adeline and Lydia. She is blessed to celebrate her parents, Ray and Shirley as well as her siblings, Kim and Chris and their respective families.

Robin May
Mrs. Robin May is a long time career educator who has given over 29 years of service and dedication in the field. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Masters in Curriculum and School Administration from East Carolina University. Her educational career started in Nash County where she served as a middle school teacher, a middle and high school assistant principal, an elementary and middle school principal, Executive Director for Secondary Schools, and Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services. Mrs. May joined Wilson County Schools on July 1, 2017. After serving as a School Improvement Grant Coach at Barnes Elementary, Mrs. May moved into the Executive Director for Federal Programs position. Mrs. May joined Senior Staff on July 1, 2022 as Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services.
Mrs. May is committed to building and supporting administrators’ and teachers’ abilities to meet the needs of all students. As the Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services, she oversees learning for students in preschool through early college, professional development, special education, English learner programs, parent involvement, social emotional/mental health supports, and more.
Mrs. May comments, “I am excited to be able to serve with the amazing team of educators in Wilson County. I believe that building strong, trusting relationships with all stakeholders enables teams to reach the highest levels of success. I am committed to continuous professional growth opportunities for all staff members and ensuring that our students have strong instruction centered on the NC Standard Course of Study, as well as innovative opportunities to build their critical thinking and collaborative skills to ensure that our students graduate with the skills necessary to pursue their post secondary dreams.”

Dr. Ben Williams
Dr. Ben Williams joined Wilson County Schools on July 1, 2020. Prior to beginning his tenure with Wilson County Schools, Dr. Williams served as the Interim Superintendent for Johnston County Public Schools. Dr. Williams has 21 years of experience in education. During that time he has served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent, and interim superintendent. Dr. Williams comments, “I am excited to be able to serve the Wilson County Schools staff, students, parents, and community. It is an honor to work with such an outstanding team.” Dr. Williams is a husband, father of four, and military veteran. He earned his B.A. in Sociology from North Carolina State University, Masters in School Administration from North Carolina State University, and his Ed.D in Educational Leadership from The University of North Carolina Wilmington.
